Anyone who has tried to combine paid work with the care of small children knows that the question is rarely whether the system is unfair. The question is what you are going to do about Tuesday.

The practical decisions tend to cluster around a few axes: cost, distance, hours, flexibility, and the patchwork of formal and informal help that most families end up assembling. None of these are independent of the others, and changing one usually changes the rest.

Cost is the most visible constraint and often the least flexible. Distance is the second-order one: a cheaper option an hour away can end up more expensive than a closer one once travel time is counted properly. Hours are the third — many jobs have edges that no formal childcare arrangement covers cleanly.

The informal layer matters more than it is usually credited. Grandparents, neighbours, friends with overlapping school runs, the colleague who covers a meeting so you can leave at three. These arrangements are fragile and unpaid, and they are doing a great deal of the actual work.

Useful coverage of childcare and work should make these trade-offs visible without dressing them up as lifestyle choices. They are economic decisions taken under constraint, and they shape careers in ways that are easy to underestimate from the outside.
